A 2018 National Drug Use Survey by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has revealed a troubling statistic — 14.3 million Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 actively use psychoactive substances.
This alarming figure was shared by the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Muhammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), during a keynote address in Kaduna.
Marwa spoke at the official launch of a sensitization campaign targeting illicit drug use and domestic violence across Nigeria’s North-West geopolitical zone.
The campaign, organized by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and supported by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, aims to educate communities on the dangers of drug abuse and the link to domestic violence.
According to Marwa, the campaign, themed “Stop Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence in Our Communities”, reflects the government’s commitment to building a healthier, safer society.
He stressed that substance abuse is fueling a wave of violence and health crises in many communities, urging all Nigerians to support the fight against drug addiction and its devastating consequences.
