16 Killed in Ogun Highway Inferno

A tragic accident claimed the lives of 16 people on Tuesday afternoon along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State, leaving only charred remains behind. Three other passengers sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

The crash occurred around 1 p.m. near Muhammadu Buhari Estate in Kobape Village, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. The vehicle involved was a white Mazda commercial bus, registered as KJA 949 YJ, carrying passengers traveling from Ibadan to Sango-Ota.

Confirming the incident, Florence Okpe, Public Education Officer of the Ogun Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), described the scene as horrific, with the bus engulfed in flames before rescuers could intervene.

The rescue operation was personally led by Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwumi Fasakin. According to Okpe, the fire was so intense that the genders of the victims could not be identified, as they were burnt beyond recognition.

Preliminary reports suggest that the lone crash may have been caused by excessive speed or mechanical failure, though full investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause.

The FRSC urged motorists to always observe speed limits, check their vehicles’ roadworthiness before trips, and prioritize passenger safety to avoid future tragedies on the nation’s highways.
