Irigwe Chiefdom, Bassa LGA of Plateau State late Sunday night.
According to the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), the gunmen invaded the village under the cover of darkness and opened fire indiscriminately. Danjuma Dickson Auta, Secretary General of the IDA, told reporters over 45 bodies had been recovered as of Monday morning, with the death toll possibly rising.
The attackers also reportedly set fire to about 30 houses, leaving the once peaceful community in ruins.
Plateau State’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon Joyce Ramnap, condemned the incident, calling it “one too many.” She described the recurring violence as a direct threat to the peace and stability of the state. “It is sad that in less than two weeks after our people were killed in Bokkos, we are witnessing another massacre,” she stated.
Ramnap urged residents to remain calm and vigilant while security agencies pursue the attackers. “Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration will not tolerate any group or individuals disrupting the hard-won peace of Plateau,” she said, while warning against reprisal attacks.
The latest attack adds to the growing wave of violence in Plateau State, reviving fears of instability and insecurity in Nigeria’s north-central region.
