The U.S. government has ordered around 930,000 migrants who entered under former President Joe Biden’s CBP One app policy to self-deport immediately, according to media reports on Tuesday. The move marks a major crackdown on undocumented immigration.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed to AFP that formal termination notices had been issued, but did not specify the criteria for selecting those affected. The notices direct recipients to leave voluntarily via the CBP Home App or face forcible removal.
“Formal termination notices have been issued, and affected aliens are urged to voluntarily self-deport using the CBP Home App,” the DHS official stated. “Those who refuse will be found, removed, and permanently barred from reentry.”
The CBP One app, introduced in January 2023, allowed migrants to schedule border entry appointments. However, President Donald Trump, who returned to office this year, canceled the app’s use on his first day, effectively cutting off access for asylum seekers at the southern border.
Trump has vowed to deport “millions” of undocumented migrants, maintaining his hardline stance on immigration. Critics have accused him of using inflammatory rhetoric, as he has previously referred to some migrants as “animals” and “monsters.”
Defending the deportation orders, the DHS stated, “Canceling these paroles is a promise kept to the American people to secure our borders and protect national security.” The termination notices were reportedly sent via email, citing U.S. immigration law that allows parole status revocation.
