Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has called on Oyo indigenes at home and abroad to embrace their cultural and religious heritage for spiritual fulfillment, personal growth, and global understanding.
Speaking on the challenges facing Nigeria, the monarch urged Nigerians in the diaspora to look beyond the country’s difficulties and instead focus on the deeper significance of returning home to reconnect with their roots.
Oba Owoade emphasized that culture and tradition serve as the foundation for any society’s growth. He warned that any nation that neglects its heritage risks losing its identity and development potential.
“Our people must immerse themselves in our traditions and religion for spiritual strength and personal fulfillment,” he stated. “You should see beyond the struggles of nation-building and focus on the significance of cultural self-rediscovery.”
The Alaafin also criticized the lingering colonial mindset that has led many to wrongly perceive indigenous traditions as outdated or fetish. He highlighted Oyo’s sophisticated system of governance, which existed for over 600 years and remains one of the earliest democratic models in history.
Calling for unity and commitment, he urged the people of Oyo to preserve their heritage, ensuring that their cultural and religious identity continues to be recognized globally.
