The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has banned Eedris Abdulkareem’s latest protest song, Tell Your Papa, from airing on radio and television, citing its “objectionable nature” and violation of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
In a memo dated April 9, 2025, NBC’s Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Susan Obi, classified the song as Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB), referencing Section 3.1.8, which prohibits content deemed “inappropriate or offensive.”
The song, which has gone viral on social media, directly addresses Seyi Tinubu, urging him to inform his father, President Bola Tinubu, of the hardships faced by Nigerians. Lyrics such as “Seyi, tell your papa country hard. Tell your papa people dey die” have sparked widespread reactions.
Despite the broadcast ban, the song continues to trend online. Reacting to the decision, Abdulkareem criticized the government, stating, “Truth and constructive criticism are now crimes in Nigeria.”
He compared the move to the 2004 ban on his song Jaga Jaga under the Obasanjo administration, declaring, “I have traveled this road before.”
