In a strategic move aimed at enhancing state energy planning, Nigerian governors signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Energy China, a leading company specializing in renewable energy and gas production. The agreement seeks to strengthen energy governance and promote energy security, efficiency, and economic development across the States.
The Gombe State governor, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya, speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) chairman, emphasized that the MoU marks a significant step in improving the country’s energy framework. He highlighted that Nigeria is embarking on a transformative journey to improve electricity access, particularly through renewable energy, following the passage of the Electricity Act of 2023.
“The Electricity Act has introduced structures aimed at boosting investments and enhancing the reliability of power supply,” Yahaya stated. “We are moving toward decentralized energy solutions, with a focus on integrating renewable sources to provide affordable and sustainable electricity.”
Despite these advancements, Yahaya acknowledged the challenges of infrastructure, financing, and regulatory hurdles that continue to impede progress. He stressed the need for collaboration between the government, private investors, and international stakeholders to address these issues.
States across Nigeria are also actively pursuing energy reforms, with many crafting policies that align with national objectives while addressing local needs. These efforts include establishing regulatory bodies to drive local electricity markets and implementing flexible solar solutions tailored to regional requirements.
The governor concluded by noting the vital role of the NGF’s Power Desk in coordinating energy efforts across states. The Desk supports states in navigating the responsibilities outlined in the Electricity Act and facilitates the integration of renewable energy solutions at the local level.
