The Lagos State government has sealed 14 markets and commercial facilities along Ketu and Ikorodu Road for repeatedly violating the state’s waste management laws.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the action follows numerous warnings ignored by traders and operators, stressing that the markets will remain shut indefinitely.
“The only acceptable path is to adopt and maintain proper waste management practices as required by LAWMA,” Wahab stated, reinforcing the zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations.
Among the sealed locations are Erukan Market, Oja Oba Market, Owoseni Tundas Market, and multiple plazas in Ketu and Mile 12, with authorities demanding strict compliance before reopening.
LAWMA’s CEO, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, urged market leaders to enforce internal waste policing, provide double dino bins, and prevent waste dumping on road medians and streets to avoid future sanctions.
He warned that the enforcement drive would intensify, adding that no market would be spared if it failed to comply with Lagos’ waste disposal regulations.
