President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Federal Highway, a vital transport corridor for over 12 northern states.
The project, initially awarded to Julius Berger under former President Muhammadu Buhari, stalled and was later revoked and reassigned by the Tinubu administration.
Speaking on Tinubu’s behalf at Jere, Kagarko LGA, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani described the road as “the busiest in the North and second busiest in the country,” citing years of neglect that led to loss of lives and economic strain.
“Reconstruction will boost jobs, enhance security, and transform the region’s economy,” Sani noted, adding that the improved security situation along the route is the result of non-kinetic peace strategies.
He credited NSA Nuhu Ribadu and security agencies for stabilising the area under the Kaduna Peace Model.
Minister of Works David Umahi announced that the 700km road will be constructed with concrete-reinforced pavement and completed in 14 months, mirroring the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway standard.
He also revealed an additional 11km extension to the Aminu Kano International Airport, bringing the Kano section to 291km.
