Illegal Mining Claims Four Lives

Tragedy has struck again at an illegal mining site in the Shiroro local government area of Niger State, claiming the lives of at least four individuals. The devastating incident reportedly occurred around 8 am on Tuesday in the Farin-Doki area, a location alarmingly close to Galadima Kogo, where a horrific mining collapse resulted in the deaths of 30 people in June 2024.

Details emerging from the scene suggest a desperate and ultimately fatal attempt at rescue. Initial reports indicate that two of the victims were first trapped by unstable rocks hanging precariously above the deep excavation. In a display of perhaps misguided bravery, two other individuals then became trapped themselves while trying to reach and save those initially caught in the perilous situation.

A local villager who spoke with LEADERSHIP news outlet revealed the heartbreaking detail that all four of the deceased miners were reportedly indigenes of Kano State, far from their homes and likely drawn to the dangerous work in search of livelihood.

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Wasiu Abiodun, has officially confirmed the tragic incident, adding another somber chapter to the ongoing concerns surrounding the dangers of illegal mining activities in the region. This latest loss of life underscores the urgent need for stricter regulation and safer alternatives for those driven to such hazardous work.
