World Bank Injects $700M Into Kebbi

The World Bank is investing a massive $700 million into Kebbi State’s water and sanitation systems under the SURWASH programme—a joint effort with Nigeria’s federal government aimed at improving urban and rural hygiene nationwide.

This was disclosed by Engr Abdulhamid Adamu Gwaram, national coordinator and team leader of the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme, during a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris in Birnin Kebbi.

Gwaram, received by Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Bala Tafida, praised Kebbi’s proactive role in the project. He stated that Kebbi had successfully passed the eligibility phase and was now advancing into the final round, making it closer to accessing the full benefits of the programme.

He noted that SURWASH uses a results-based financing system—meaning states must show real evidence of progress before funding is released. “Kebbi State has the capacity, capability and commitment to deliver,” Gwaram said confidently.

Governor Idris, represented by Tafida, assured the team that Kebbi State would continue meeting all requirements, including necessary budgetary commitments, and urged programme sponsors to also hold up their end.

Tafida concluded by emphasizing the state’s readiness to implement the $700 million investment strictly for its intended purpose—improving water access, sanitation, and hygiene for millions of residents in Kebbi.
