By Multi-talented autistic artist Tobechi Achionye, fondly known as Toby, has called for the creation of a national support fund to promote inclusive education, therapy, creative empowerment, and awareness programs for individuals with special needs. He made the call during a world news conference marking the 2025 Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in Abuja.
The event saw the official launch of Toby’s humanitarian initiative titled “Be Kind By Toby: Kindness For All Abilities.” He also unveiled two powerful books focusing on autism awareness and inclusive values in both schools and homes. In his emotional speech, Toby urged governments, Nigerians of goodwill, and civil society to prioritise the needs of autistic children.
“I’m calling on stakeholders, including corporate bodies, to support the creation of the Be Kind for All Abilities Support Fund,” he said. He explained that the fund would help power therapy, inclusive learning, creative growth, and national awareness projects for people living with autism and other neurodiverse conditions.
Former senator Frank Ibezim, who represented Imo North, praised Toby for his boldness and talent. “Diagnosed at four and once non-verbal, Toby is now a trailblazer, using art, music, and fashion to change how the world sees autism,” Ibezim said. He described Toby as “a shining beacon of kindness, courage, and creativity.”
Ibezim highlighted Toby’s achievements, including placing as second runner-up in Autism’s Got Talent in Atlanta. He also spoke of Toby’s fashion line, T-shirt designs, and a new song titled Be Kind, calling it “a soulful anthem that urges us to lead with empathy and compassion.”
Noni Okocha, founder of I Am the Future of Nigeria Youth Initiative and author of the two books inspired by Toby, said, “These books reflect Toby’s life, reminding us that every child has a voice, even if it doesn’t sound like ours. We hope to teach children and adults to embrace differences and always be kind.
