A Champions League quarterfinal match between Arsenal and Real Madrid turned chaotic in Kano on Wednesday night, as fans clashed violently following the final whistle.
The unrest broke out in Fagge local government area after Arsenal sealed a 2-1 victory on the night, eliminating Real Madrid with a 5-1 aggregate score. The win marked Arsenal’s first UCL semi-final appearance in 16 years, but celebrations quickly turned into street violence.
In a viral Facebook video shared by user Mustapha Muhd Gujba Banker, groups of young men identified as Arsenal and Madrid fans were seen exchanging blows, throwing stones, and shouting profanities. The clash reportedly started with loud taunts and mocking chants from jubilant Arsenal supporters.
“The fight started immediately after the match ended,” the caption read. “What began with words turned into a full-blown fight.”
Eyewitnesses described a tense atmosphere as crowds poured into the streets. Some residents quickly shut their shops while others ran for safety as the fight intensified in the area.
As of Thursday morning, the Kano State Police Command has not issued any official statement. It remains unclear if there were any injuries or arrests linked to the violence.
Football rivalries are known to stir emotions in Nigeria, but incidents of this scale highlight growing concerns about sports-related violence and the need for better fan education and security during major matches.
