Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central, joined Christians across the globe in celebrating Easter, calling on Nigerian leaders to avoid divisive politics and narratives that could worsen national challenges. His Easter message emphasized unity, love, and purpose as the path forward.
Bamidele used the occasion to highlight the Senate’s ongoing work on legislation to establish state police as a way to tackle insecurity. He said efforts are underway to provide the necessary legal framework, signaling a significant step towards localizing security and improving safety across the country.
“As we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord, we must reflect on His virtues; learn from His consecration and live His life of purpose rooted in the pursuit of justice, love, and redemption for humanity,” Bamidele said in a statement released in Abuja.
He noted that Jesus Christ, despite facing hatred and opposition, brought comfort, justice, and hope to the most vulnerable. According to Bamidele, this example should inspire Nigerians to live as one people working for the good of all. “We must become compatriots, not competitors; collaborators, not combatants,” he said.
Referencing recent violence in Benue and Plateau States, Bamidele condemned the killings as a betrayal of the peace and love Christ represents. He criticized leaders who exploit the country’s hardship for selfish political advantage, urging them to follow Christ’s example instead.
He concluded by reaffirming the National Assembly’s commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria. “Nigeria is our ultimate project,” he stated, adding that every citizen, regardless of background, should unite in pursuit of a stronger nation.
