Edo Governor Suspends Uwano Monarch

Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the indefinite suspension of Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor, the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area. The decision was made in response to rising insecurity, including repeated kidnappings and killings in the area.

The announcement was made public through a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua. The statement highlighted that the suspension is aimed at addressing the breakdown of order in the traditional ruler’s domain.

The unrest recently escalated with the death of a palace chief, John Ikhamate, prompting the arrest of Chief Peter Omiogbemhi, the monarch’s secretary. Authorities believe his detention is linked to the violence that has plagued the community.

“Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate suspension of Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor, the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom… over recent cases of incessant kidnapping and killings in his domain,” the statement read.

Itua confirmed that the monarch’s suspension is indefinite, with no date given for review or reinstatement. The move, according to insiders, signals a tougher stance on traditional rulers perceived as negligent amid growing security challenges.

Local residents have expressed mixed reactions, with some backing the governor’s action as necessary to restore safety and confidence in the area. Security operations are expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
