Akwa Ibom Probes Sports Festival Scandal

The Akwa Ibom State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into the poor outing of its athletes at the recently concluded Niger Delta Sports Festival. The state finished 6th out of nine states, sparking outrage and prompting immediate government action.

Allegations surfaced that funds meant for athlete allowances were embezzled and that many participants were left without proper kits or support. These claims triggered protests from athletes at the event and drew public attention to the mishandling of the competition.

In response, the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, inaugurated a five-man committee to investigate the matter. “The issue of the Niger Delta Festival, I didn’t think it was good to sweep it under the carpet without addressing the concerns,” he said at the inauguration.

The committee is chaired by Barr. Ime Akpan and includes Comrade Amos Etuk, Dr. Promise Etim, and Hon. John Ekpenyong as members. Mr. James James, an Assistant Director in the ministry, will serve as secretary. They have been given 10 days to submit their findings.

“This committee is not punitive, it’s not vindictive, it’s a fact-finding committee,” Bassey clarified. He emphasized that the goal is to strengthen grassroots sports and ensure effective athlete representation in future tournaments.

Chairman Akpan assured the public that the team would work without fear or favour. Athletes and residents have been urged to come forward with useful information to guide the committee’s recommendations for the betterment of sports in the state.
