Truck Brake Failure Kills Six in Kogi

Tragedy struck in Okunchi, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State Monday night as six people were killed and five others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash. The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m., involving seven vehicles, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Confirming the incident on Tuesday in Lokoja, acting Sector Commander Samuel Ogundayo described the crash as “tragic and most unfortunate.” He explained that a truck lost its brakes while trying to ascend Old Zango Hill and rolled backward, crushing two tricycles, three cars, and eventually colliding with another truck.

“The tragic and unfortunate incident left six persons dead and five others injured,” Ogundayo stated. He added that FRSC personnel responded quickly, rushing the injured to Referral Hospital in Okene, while the corpses were deposited at the Okene General Hospital mortuary.

The scene caused major traffic gridlock, which was later cleared with the help of FRSC officers and other security agencies. The accident highlighted the ongoing road safety challenges in Nigeria, especially along hilly routes where vehicle malfunctions can easily turn deadly.

Ogundayo urged motorists to maintain a safe distance from trucks, especially in hilly areas, emphasizing the dangers of brake failures. “We advise drivers to take extra caution, especially when trailing trucks. Accidents like this are preventable with simple road discipline,” he said.

He further called on all road users to obey traffic rules and maintain their vehicles, stressing that such actions would go a long way in reducing road crashes and loss of lives across the country.
