IGP Reorganises Police Mobile Force, Withdraws VIP Escorts

In a bold move to restore the Police Mobile Force (PMF) to its core mission, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday ordered the immediate reorganisation of the elite unit, announcing sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening internal security and boosting operational readiness.

The announcement came during a meeting with PMF Squadron Commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where the IGP emphasised that the unit had deviated from its primary role as a rapid-response force for riots, emergencies, and violent threats.

Key reforms include:

Immediate withdrawal of PMF personnel from unauthorised VIP escorts and non-core duties.

Quarterly training on ethics, professionalism, and combat readiness.

Mandatory standby of fully equipped tactical units across all Squadrons.

Accountability for Commanders on personnel conduct and operational discipline.

“The PMF must return to being the strike arm of the Nigeria Police,” the IGP stressed, adding that lax deployments had weakened the unit’s effectiveness.

Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, noted that Squadron Commanders are now expected to lead proactively, ensure discipline, uphold human rights, and maintain operational excellence through regular training and inspections.

The IGP also unveiled plans for new leadership strategies and capacity-building initiatives aligned with global best practices, to better equip the force in facing modern security threats.

Egbetokun expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support and acknowledged contributions from international partners in training and technical upgrades.

“This reform is not just professional; it is a moral responsibility. We must secure lives, property, and the peace of our nation,” the IGP declared.
