Seplat Energy PLC, in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), has provided free eye care to over 22,084 individuals through its long-running “Eye Can See” initiative, the company announced at a community outreach event in Owerri on Thursday.
Life-Changing Impact Since 2012
Speaking at the event, Seplat East Onshore Managing Director, Mrs Ibi-Ada Itotio—represented by Base Manager, Mr Emmanuel Otokhine—highlighted the programme’s reach since its inception in 2012.
“We have distributed 12,307 prescription glasses, performed 726 eye surgeries, and provided free eye care to over 22,000 patients,” she stated.
CSR Rooted in Sustainable Development
Itotio emphasized Seplat’s commitment to inclusive healthcare and community development. “The ‘Eye Can See’ initiative reflects Seplat’s commitment to sustainable development and inclusive healthcare,” she said.
“Our approach to CSR is guided by the belief that business should be a force for good. We invest strategically to uplift communities, close healthcare gaps, and support inclusive growth,” she added.
She noted the programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health, education, water access, and economic empowerment.
Commendation from Imo Officials
Imo State’s Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Gas Development, Mr Emeka Mgbudem, lauded Seplat’s efforts beyond its core oil and gas operations.
Chairman of the State House of Assembly Committee on Oil and Gas, Mr Francis Osuoha, also commended the initiative, encouraging Seplat to sustain the momentum.
Grateful Beneficiaries Share Their Stories
Several beneficiaries shared emotional testimonies. Mrs Veronica Okereke, 73, from Mbaitoli, said, “I thank Seplat for the free surgery. May God bless their work.”
Another recipient, Mr Charles Njoku, who underwent cataract surgery, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the company’s “thoughtful intervention.
