Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has described his defection alongside his cabinet and stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “a movement,” not just a political shift. He made the statement on Monday while addressing a massive crowd at a rally welcoming him to the ruling party.
“What you have seen here today is a movement, not a defection,” Oborevwori declared. “We have consulted stakeholders at all levels. Mr President has shown us love. We cannot face him in 2027 to work against him. When you consult widely, you can see that the love is organic.”
The governor’s move, formalised after earlier consultations on April 23, 2025, marks a major political realignment in Delta State. His predecessor, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who governed from 2015 to 2023, also switched allegiance to the APC.
At the rally, attended by APC national chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and several APC governors, Okowa said the decision was made for the greater good of the state. “In the history of a people, there is always a time to change a path for the common good of the people,” he said.
Okowa emphasized the need to connect to federal opportunities in Abuja. “There is a need to connect to that goodwill, that resource that is in Abuja of which Delta is a large contributor. I was governor for eight years; I did my best, but we lost a lot,” he said.
Describing the defection as “bold, patriotic, and well-intentioned,” Okowa stressed it was a necessary step to secure greater development for Delta State.
