…….Chaos Erupts in House as Hon. Idris Salman Defects to APC
On Tuesday, July 23, Hon. Idris Salman, the member representing Ijumu/Kabba Bunu federal constituency of Kogi state, announced his defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Salman, one of only two ADC lawmakers elected to the 10th Assembly, cited extensive consultations as the basis for his decision.
His defection, the first since the House was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, was met with loud applause from members present at the plenary. However, this celebration was quickly overshadowed by controversy.
Minority Whip Hon. Ali Isa JC immediately called for Salman’s seat to be declared vacant, referencing constitutional provisions. He argued that according to the Constitution, a member who defects from the party that sponsored him should lose his seat, particularly when there is no crisis within the party.
This assertion sparked a chaotic scene in the chamber, as members erupted in a cacophony of voices, attempting to drown out Isa’s remarks. The chamber descended into disorder, reflecting the contentious nature of party defections and the high stakes of maintaining party balance.
Salman’s defection reduces the number of the minority caucus to 179, further consolidating the ruling party’s position in the House.
