Rep. Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, has called for the immediate dismissal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL).
He said the called bothered on incompetence and hindering the growth of the nation’s economy due to crisis in the oil sector.
He also called for the sack of Mr Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and other inherited appointees.
Agbese said this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, expressing deep concern over the current state of the oil sector.
The Deputy Spokesperson, who was a staunch supporter of Kyari’s, v said his called for the removal of the CEO of NNPCL was not personal.
He added that it was part of his conviction that Tinubu is the only one who can rescue the country.
He said that the mismanagement and inefficiencies under Kyari’s leadership had led to severe setbacks in the industry.
The lawmaker said that the incompetence and mismanagement displayed by these officials are significantly hindering Nigeria’s economic growth.
According to the lawmaker, the lack of strategic planning, coupled with poor regulatory oversight by NMDPRA, has resulted in dwindling oil revenues and has exacerbated the country’s economic challenges.
“The oil sector is the backbone of our economy, and its mismanagement has far-reaching consequences for every Nigerian,” the lawmaker stated.
“We are facing a dire situation where our oil production capacity is diminishing and revenues are plummeting, all due to the incompetence and lack of effective leadership within NNPC and NMDPRA.”
The call for Kyari’s removal comes amid growing frustration among industry stakeholders and the public over the persistent fuel scarcity, fluctuating prices, and the failure to attract significant investment in the sector.
The lawmaker said fresh leadership within the NNPCL and NMDPRA is urgently needed to revive the oil industry and restore confidence among investors.
He said that “inherited appointees, led by Tinubu, have failed to deliver on their mandates, and they should not be allowed to continue holding critical positions.”
He urged Tinubu to take decisive action and bring in competent individuals capable of steering the oil sector towards sustainable growth and development.
He urged President Tinubu to make good on his promise to tackle corruption and revitalize the economy, adding that the effective management of the oil sector is pivotal to the country’s recovery and growth.
Agbese said there is an urgent need for reforms that can unlock the potential of Nigeria’s oil industry and drive economic progress.
He added that with competent leadership and effective management, the sector can once again become a cornerstone of the nation’s prosperity.
