The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently held a consumer awareness program in Keffi, Nasarawa State, to educate telecom users about their rights, responsibilities, and available services. The event aimed to help consumers improve their telecom experience by understanding key issues such as SIM registration, complaint resolution, and unsolicited messages.
Amina Shehu, NCC’s Director of Zonal Operations, represented by Assistant Director Usman Abubakar, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to protecting consumers from unfair practices and ensuring they are well-informed about industry developments.
Participants were reminded of the importance of linking their SIM cards with their National Identification Numbers (NIN) to avoid disconnection. Abubakar also warned against registering SIM cards with someone else’s NIN, highlighting strict penalties for fraudulently registered SIMs.
Consumers were encouraged to use the NCC’s toll-free number, 622, if their service providers fail to resolve complaints. For managing unsolicited messages, they were advised to activate the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) service by sending “STOP” to 2442.
During the event, several consumer issues were addressed, including unauthorized data plan changes and illegal airtime deductions. The NCC team provided guidance, while some cases were referred to service providers for further action.
The program was well-received, with attendees appreciating the Commission’s efforts to enhance their telecom experience and protect their rights.
