The House of Representatives has called on security agencies to step up efforts to tackle one-chance criminals and kidnappers in Abuja who rob victims at gunpoint and use POS machines to drain their bank accounts.
Hon. Billy Osawaru, who raised the motion, urged the House to address these crimes, which leave victims traumatized and financially devastated. He described how these criminals often torture their victims, hypnotize them, and use their bank details to withdraw money or borrow loans from shady apps.
Osawaru criticized the lack of cooperation between banks and security agencies in handling these cases. He pointed out that banks often demand extra documentation, like police reports or affidavits, making it hard for victims to seek justice.
To combat the issue, the House directed the police and other security agencies to increase surveillance and crack down on these crimes in Abuja. It also called on banks and financial service platforms like Opay and MoniePoint to prioritize cases involving fraudulent accounts and provide the necessary information to catch the culprits.
The lawmakers also urged the government to shut down illegal loan companies being used by criminals to exploit victims.
Additionally, the House asked the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, to reactivate Abuja’s public bus system and extend its operations until 9:30 pm to give residents safer transportation options.
A joint committee has been tasked with ensuring these measures are implemented to protect Abuja residents and restore safety to the city.
