Telecoms Sector Boosts Nigeria’s Economy by $70 Billion, Says NCC

 

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that the telecommunications sector, driven by technology, has contributed a remarkable $70 billion to Nigeria’s economy in recent years. This was disclosed by the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, in a keynote address at the Cyberchain event in Abuja.

Represented by Mrs. Eli Ella, Principal Manager for Digital Economy at NCC, Danbatta emphasized that digital technologies, including 5G, e-commerce, fintech, and big data, have significantly enhanced the country’s GDP and revenue-generation capacity. He noted that these advancements have also created over 500,000 jobs in both formal and informal sectors, while improving services, efficiency, and resource optimization.

Danbatta stated, “Telecommunications has contributed over $70 billion to the Nigerian economy, provided over 500,000 jobs, and improved the lives of millions of Nigerians,” highlighting the sector’s vital role in the nation’s economic growth.
