“The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called on parents and guardians to closely monitor and regulate their children’s online activities, citing the potential dangers of uncontrolled exposure to the internet.
Speaking at the First Web Rangers Nigeria Summit in Abuja, an initiative by Google aimed at promoting digital literacy and online safety, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, emphasized the need for parents to be aware of their children’s digital engagement. The summit, themed “Navigating the Responsibility of Online Safety Between Users, Providers, and Regulators,” focused on addressing the threats posed by online criminal activities, particularly towards children and youth.
Represented by Dr. Haru Alhassan, Director of New Media and Information Security, Danbatta highlighted the NCC’s commitment to supporting the governance and security of Nigeria’s cyberspace. He also stressed the Commission’s role in facilitating the adoption of innovative technologies and promoting ICT skills. Additionally, the NCC’s establishment of the Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) in 2021 was noted as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure safety in the digital ecosystem.”
