NCC Commits to Closing Nigeria’s Digital Gap with Local Solutions

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is determined to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide by encouraging the development of local solutions. According to the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the commission will continue to support efforts, including competitions, to discover new talents that can provide solutions to the country’s challenges.

Danbatta spoke at the third edition of the ICT Innovation Competition and Exhibition held at the Digital Bridge Institute in Oshodi, Lagos, with the theme “Utilizing Indigenous Digital Solutions to Bridge the Digital Divide.”

Represented by the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Engr. Ubale Maska, Danbatta noted that one of the challenges Nigeria faces in the ICT sector is the lack of locally produced content, which makes it difficult for Nigerians to fully benefit from digital technologies. He explained that the country often relies on foreign content, which may not always meet local needs. However, he pointed out that the ICT sector has the potential to drive economic growth by providing access to digital tools, promoting innovation, and creating jobs.

“This year’s competition allows innovators to show off new ideas and solutions that can address problems in both industry and society,” Danbatta said. “It also encourages partnerships that can help the ICT sector grow in a sustainable way.”

The event supports Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy, which focuses on developing digital services, promoting emerging technologies, and boosting local content. Danbatta said it is crucial to support the growth of Nigerian digital businesses, including startups and larger companies, to stimulate growth in the ICT sector.

He also highlighted the need for funding to build digital skills in Nigeria. This would ensure that the country has the right talent to support the growth of the ICT industry. Not only are technical skills important, but business and entrepreneurship skills are also necessary for success in the digital economy.

In closing, Danbatta emphasized that with proper investment in skills and innovation, Nigeria can build a strong ICT sector that will contribute to the country’s development.
