Nigeria and Niger Sign Agreement to Coordinate Border Frequency Use

Nigeria and Niger Republic have signed an agreement to coordinate the use of radio frequencies along their shared border. This will help ensure smooth and uninterrupted services across both countries.

The agreement was signed at the Digital Economy Regional Conference, which was held in Abuja. Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, signed for Nigeria, while Mr. Moussa Baraze, Niger’s Minister of Post and New Information Technologies, signed for Niger. The signing was witnessed by Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and Mrs. Aichatou Oumani, Chairperson of Niger’s National Council for Regulation of Electronic Communications and Post.

The agreement focuses on frequencies between 87.5 MHz and 30 GHz in the areas along the border. It will help both countries manage these frequencies, ensuring no signal interference occurs between their telecom service providers. It also sets out steps for resolving any interference issues that may arise.

If harmful interference happens, the affected country will inform the other in writing. The country causing the interference must fix the issue within 30 days of receiving the notice.

However, the agreement does not apply to services related to security, maritime, or national defense, as they are exempt from these rules.
