To mark World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) 2023, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced the TELCARE Desk to improve consumer support. The launch, which took place in Abuja on Wednesday, was part of the celebration with the theme, “Empowering Consumers through Clean Energy Transitions.”
Professor Adeolu Akande, the Chairman of the NCC’s Board, unveiled the TELCARE Desk, starting in Abuja as a pilot project. The NCC plans to set up more desks across the country to help telecom consumers. The TELCARE Desk will provide information, resolve complaints, and serve as a platform for consumers to inquire about issues related to telecom services. It will also raise awareness of the commission’s work and advocate for consumer rights.
Akande emphasized that this year’s theme would play a key role in the commission’s regulatory focus. “We are dedicated to using resources responsibly and supporting the industry in its transition to renewable energy to protect the environment,” he said.
In his speech, NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, called on telecom companies to invest more in renewable energy. With the growing demand for network services, especially with the launch of 5G, sustainable energy solutions are becoming crucial for efficient connectivity. Danbatta explained that adopting energy-efficient technology, like solar-powered systems, wireless electricity, or hybrid models, can help reduce costs and minimize environmental damage. This transition would not only lower capital and operating costs but also reduce service prices for consumers.
Danbatta also encouraged Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and equipment manufacturers to develop innovative energy solutions in line with the International Telecommunications Union’s standards. These efforts are necessary to tackle climate change and reduce the environmental footprint of telecom operations.
The launch of the TELCARE Desk is another step in the NCC’s mission to ensure consumer rights are protected while improving the telecom industry’s sustainability.
