A number of northern states in Nigeria are currently experiencing power blackouts following issues with faulty transmission lines, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported.
To address the recurring failures of the national grid, the federal government has set up a six-member committee to investigate the problem and suggest solutions within the next nine days.
Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, formed the committee and instructed them to provide the government with plans to improve the national grid’s reliability by November 1, 2024.
The news was shared by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister of Power, in a statement released in Abuja.
The national grid has failed three times within the last week, sparking concerns about the stability of the country’s power supply. The Minister voiced frustration over the repeated collapses, stressing that they could undo the progress made in the past year.
The committee will be led by Nafisat Ali, the Executive Director of the Independent System Operator (ISO). Other members include Dr. Chidi Ike, Commissioner of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC); Engr. Ishola, General Manager of the National Control Centre (NCC); Emmanuel Nosike, Director of Transmission at the Ministry of Power; Ali Sharifai, General Manager of the Transmission Service Provider (TSP); and Adedayo Olowoniyi, Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power.
The government is hopeful that the committee will help find solutions to improve the stability of the national grid and reduce power disruptions in the country.
