The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has withdrawn its earlier statement about possibly sanctioning Starlink, the satellite internet service provider owned by Elon Musk, due to its recent price increase.
On Tuesday, the NCC issued a correction, admitting that the previous statement was made by mistake and requesting media outlets to remove it.
“Please note that the press statement about Starlink was issued in error. It is hereby WITHDRAWN. Kindly remove it if already published,” said Kunle Azeez, the NCC’s Media Relations Manager.
Earlier, the NCC had hinted at taking action against Starlink after the company raised its subscription fees without approval. Starlink’s monthly fee went up by 97%, from N38,000 to N75,000, and the cost of its installation kit increased by 34%, from N440,000 to N590,000.
Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, had expressed surprise over the hike, explaining that Starlink’s request for the price change was still under review and hadn’t been approved yet.
It’s still unclear how the NCC will address the situation after retracting the initial statement.
