NCC Launches System to Stop Mobile Phone Theft

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a new system, the Device Management System (NCC-DMS), to tackle the rising issue of mobile phone theft in Nigeria. This system will track and disable stolen phones, making them unusable and discouraging criminals.

The NCC-DMS is part of the NCC’s efforts to improve digital security and protect consumers. It will connect to mobile networks nationwide, allowing operators to block stolen phones from using any telecommunication services.

How It Works
The system acts as a central database for monitoring devices across all mobile networks. It uses the phone’s unique identification number, called the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), to track and block stolen devices. It also synchronises with global IMEI databases to ensure accurate records.

The NCC stated that mobile operators must link their systems to the NCC-DMS and follow its rules to ensure all devices on their networks meet the required standards. Device suppliers are also required to register approved phones in the system, while individuals can register their personal devices, although with some limits on the number of devices allowed per person.

Why It Matters
The NCC-DMS is expected to reduce phone theft by making stolen devices useless in Nigeria. The system will also ensure that only approved devices are used, helping to prevent fraud and illegal activities involving mobile phones.

Costs and Compliance
The NCC has outlined that registering devices on the system will involve fees, separate from existing type approval charges. These fees will apply to both individuals and suppliers.

By rolling out this system, the NCC aims to protect consumers, enhance security, and create a safer digital environment across Nigeria. This new measure reflects the commission’s commitment to addressing pressing challenges in the telecom sector.
