NCC Launches System to Combat Phone Theft and Regulate Devices

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a new system called the Device Management System (NCC-DMS) to monitor and regulate mobile devices in Nigeria. This system is designed to track all devices connected to local networks and help tackle issues like phone theft and the use of unapproved devices.

According to the NCC’s Type Approval Business Rule 2024, all mobile network operators must connect to the NCC-DMS. The system will act as a central database, using each device’s unique IMEI number to identify and monitor phones across the country. It will also keep a record of all devices in Nigeria.

The NCC explained that this move is aimed at improving security and ensuring compliance with established regulations. The system will block stolen or illegal devices from accessing the network, making them unusable within the country.

Mobile operators are required to align their policies with those set by the NCC and synchronize their Equipment Identity Registers with the NCC-DMS to maintain uniform standards.

Individuals can register their devices on the system, although there will be a limit to the number of devices one person can register. Device suppliers must also ensure only approved devices are listed in the system.

A registration fee will apply to each device, separate from the type approval fees. This initiative is expected to boost security, reduce fraud, and create a more organized system for managing mobile devices in Nigeria.
