Professor Calls for National Cybercrime Control Centre

A Computer Science professor from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. John Kolo Alhassan, has called on the federal government to establish a National Cybercrime Control Centre (NCCC) with regional offices in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

He also proposed the creation of a Dark Web Monitoring Centre to address the growing challenges of advanced internet crimes and cyber warfare.

Speaking during a lecture titled “Achieving and Sustaining Victory in the Emerging Cyber Warfare,” Prof. Alhassan emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to combat cybercrime. He outlined the importance of monitoring networks, detecting suspicious activities, and responding promptly to threats.

He expressed concern over the rise in identity theft, fake banking applications, and fraudulent alerts often facilitated through the Dark Web. To tackle these issues, he recommended essential measures like password protection, two-factor authentication, regular security checks, and continuous employee training.

Prof. Alhassan also advocated for public awareness campaigns through media platforms and the adoption of advanced surveillance tools to enhance cybersecurity. He urged internet users to stay updated on new cyberattack methods and to prepare recovery plans in case of security breaches.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, commended Prof. Alhassan for his valuable insights and appreciated the audience for their engagement during the event.
