The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) has pledged to help close the digital gap in Northern Nigeria. After receiving a Point of Presence (PoP) in Gombe from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) earlier this year, IXPN is now focusing on improving internet access in the North-East.
At a recent workshop called the “Gombe Connectivity Engagement Forum,” IXPN CEO Muhammed Rudman explained that building fiber optic networks between states is expensive due to challenges such as right-of-way issues, multiple taxes, vandalism, and security risks.
Rudman emphasized the importance of regional internet exchanges (IXPs) for better network performance, lower costs, and faster internet speeds. By keeping internet traffic local, users can enjoy a better experience with quicker access to websites and emails.
He also pointed out that regional IXPs can help reduce dependence on long-distance fiber connections and improve access to essential internet resources. By promoting regional IXPs, IXPN hopes to make the internet more accessible, affordable, and reliable for everyone in Nigeria.
