NCC Directs Telecoms to Simplify Tariffs and Promotions

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered telecommunications companies (telcos) to make their tariff plans, bundles, and promotions easier to understand.

This move aims to ensure consumers are fully aware of how much they are being charged for voice calls, text messages, and data services. The NCC wants telcos to remove promotional offers from regular tariff plans, so that promotions are clearer and separate.

In a directive titled *Guidance on the Simplification of Tariffs in the Nigerian Communications Sector*, the NCC stressed that promotions must now be approved separately and must follow specific rules, such as time limits and quality standards.

The NCC also requires mobile network operators (MNOs) to show a detailed table on their websites that lists the features of each tariff plan and bundle. This will help customers compare different options and choose the best plan for their needs.

The purpose of the new directive is to make tariffs simpler, more transparent, and fair, helping consumers make informed decisions while encouraging healthy competition among service providers. While telcos can continue with bonus-based plans until December 31, 2024, they are expected to transition all customers to simpler plans by then.

Service providers must clearly show all relevant details about their tariffs, including the plan name, cost, duration, and prices for local and international calls, data speeds, and usage policies.

The NCC also stressed that telcos must ensure that this information is clear and easy to understand, whether online or through USSD codes. Operators must also offer standalone data bundles at fair prices and avoid unnecessary products or confusing pricing.

Finally, the NCC reminded telecom companies to comply with its Quality of Service standards and meet the necessary performance indicators to ensure good service for all customers.
