The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that 774 electoral offenders from the 2023 general elections are currently facing prosecution in courts across Nigeria. This is part of INEC’s collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to ensure accountability for electoral crimes.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this during a meeting with media organizations in Abuja. He noted that successful prosecutions have already been secured in Kebbi and Kogi States, while joint efforts with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have led to convictions for vote-buying in Lagos, Kwara, and Gombe States.
Yakubu also highlighted the recent prosecution of a Returning Officer in Akwa Ibom State as evidence of INEC’s commitment to strengthening the electoral process and holding offenders accountable.
