Federal University VC: We Take Pride in Training Healthcare Professionals for Global Practice

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu, Professor John Emaimo, has stated that the institution takes pride in seeing its graduates practice abroad. According to him, the migration of trained healthcare professionals to other countries is not a loss but an economic advantage.

He made this remark during a press conference ahead of the university’s Founder’s Day Celebration, emphasizing that the institution views this trend as a source of international recognition and income generation.

“When our graduates go abroad to practice, we see it as an economic benefit. It enhances global healthcare while also contributing to our economy through remittances,” Emaimo explained.

The professor further highlighted that many Nigerian-trained healthcare professionals are excelling in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. According to him, their success strengthens Nigeria’s reputation as a provider of top-tier medical talent.

While some experts argue that the mass exodus of healthcare professionals, often called the “brain drain,” negatively affects the local healthcare system, Emaimo maintained that exporting skilled professionals is a mark of excellence.

His statement has sparked discussions about balancing local healthcare needs with global opportunities, raising questions about how Nigeria can retain more of its trained professionals while still benefiting from their international success.
