Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sadness over the passing of Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who died in Lagos on Friday at the age of 96. He described Adebanjo as a fearless advocate for justice and a better Nigeria.
In a condolence message shared through his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima praised Adebanjo’s lifelong dedication to democracy. He highlighted his roles as the Organising Secretary of the Action Group and a key figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), where he fought against military rule.
“We haven’t just lost a leader; we have lost an institution. Until his final days, Pa Adebanjo remained firm in his beliefs, always pushing for a fairer Nigeria,” Shettima said.
He described Adebanjo as a political giant whose contributions to Nigeria’s history would never be forgotten.
“In our tradition, when an elder like this passes, a great part of history goes with them. Pa Adebanjo was a bridge between our past and present struggles for democracy,” Shettima added.
The Vice President also extended condolences to Adebanjo’s family, especially his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, praying for strength for them in this difficult time.
