Expert Warns of Rising Clinical Malnutrition in Nigeria

Dr. Theresa Pounds, President of the West African Society of Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN), has raised alarm over the increasing rate of clinical malnutrition in Nigerian hospitals, warning that it threatens patient health and recovery.

Speaking at a virtual press briefing, Dr. Pounds urged the Federal, State, and Local Governments to prioritize clinical malnutrition as a critical healthcare issue.

She noted that despite its growing impact, clinical malnutrition remains largely overlooked within Nigeria’s healthcare system.

To address the crisis, WASPEN has scheduled a conference themed “Bridging the Gap: Integrating Hospital and Community Malnutrition Care in Developing Countries” for June 17-19, 2025.

The event will bring together policymakers, medical professionals, nutritionists, and other key stakeholders to develop strategies for combating hospital and community malnutrition.

Experts hope the conference will drive policy changes and improve nutritional care in Nigerian hospitals and beyond.
