The Federal Government has approved the relocation of 29 out of Nigeria’s 256 custodial centers due to rapid urbanization.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Friday in Abuja during the commissioning of new security equipment for the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).
As part of the initiative, 39 mini-Green Maria vehicles for inmate transport and five bullet-resistant guard booths were unveiled at the NCoS headquarters.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that paramilitary jobs should not be seen as poverty alleviation schemes but as serious career paths requiring proper training and commitment.
To support this vision, he announced plans for a paramilitary academy aimed at developing young talent for the Service.
The relocation of the custodial centers is expected to improve security and address challenges posed by growing urban populations.
