More States, Hospitals Expand Kidney Transplant Services

More states and medical institutions across Nigeria are making plans to establish kidney treatment and transplant centers to improve healthcare access.

Following reports of successful transplants in both public and private hospitals, the expansion aims to attract more local and international patients seeking affordable and efficient treatment.

Medical directors and consultants revealed that 20% of their kidney transplant patients come from countries like the US, UK, Canada, and India, highlighting Nigeria’s growing reputation in the field.

The affordability and flexibility of organ transplant procedures in Nigeria have been key factors driving medical tourism to the country.

Further investigations show that the Renal Unit at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) in Ile-Ife has successfully performed 22 kidney transplants since its first in 2002.

With more hospitals investing in transplant programs, experts believe Nigeria is on track to becoming a major hub for kidney care in Africa.
