Chevening Scholars Return to Drive Change

A development activist, Aderonke Ige, along with 43 other Nigerian Chevening scholars, has returned home with a renewed commitment to climate justice and youth empowerment. Their studies in the United Kingdom have equipped them with fresh perspectives to create meaningful impact in Nigeria.

The scholars, who recently completed their master’s programs under the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, were warmly welcomed by the British High Commission in Nigeria. The reception marked the beginning of their contributions to national development.

At a gathering held at the British residence in Lagos, the returning scholars reflected on their transformative experiences abroad. They shared insights on how their education in the UK broadened their understanding of global issues and strengthened their leadership skills.

Aderonke Ige, who earned an MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, described her time abroad as “well-rounded, expository, and challenging in meaningful ways.” She emphasized the value of a diverse learning environment.

She also highlighted the UK’s strong focus on mental well-being and the inclusive, multicultural nature of London as key influences on her advocacy work. These experiences, she noted, will shape her approach to driving social change in Nigeria.

With their return, the scholars aim to channel their knowledge into initiatives that address pressing issues like climate action, policy reforms, and youth empowerment, reinforcing their commitment to national and global development.
