Tinubu Boosts Health Budget to End Medical Tourism

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ending medical tourism by increasing Nigeria’s healthcare budget.

Speaking during a visit to the National Eye Centre, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, and National Ear Care Centre in Kaduna, Salako emphasized that the government’s goal is to improve local healthcare facilities to match international standards.

He highlighted that Tinubu’s decision to raise the health sector’s budget aims to reduce the need for Nigerians to seek medical treatment abroad.

Beyond upgrading facilities, the increased funding is also expected to lower the cost of essential medicines by introducing waivers and regulatory reforms.

Salako added that the government is also addressing the “Japa syndrome” by implementing policy changes to retain skilled healthcare workers in the country.

With these reforms, he assured Nigerians that the administration is dedicated to making quality healthcare accessible, reducing medical tourism, and strengthening the nation’s health system.
