Angry youths in Akwa Ibom State set fire to five military vehicles on Wednesday in retaliation for the killing of a youth activist by a soldier.
The unrest erupted in Ete, a coastal community in Ikot Abasi LGA, following allegations of harassment and extortion by military personnel attached to an oil firm, Sterling Global.
According to eyewitness Effiong Ekwere, soldiers were pursuing a diesel-laden truck, allegedly for extortion, when enraged youths attempted to disarm one of them.
In the struggle, the soldier opened fire on the activist, killing him instantly, which further escalated tensions and led to violent reprisals.
Protesters vented their anger by torching military vehicles, demanding justice for the slain activist and an end to alleged oppression by security forces.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but the situation remains tense as security forces work to restore order in the community.
