Lateef Fagbemi, and the National Judicial Council (NJC) to quickly step into the ongoing crisis within the Benue State judiciary.
The group warned that if the NJC and the Attorney General fail to act, they will mobilize a mass protest and occupy the NJC premises to demand the protection of democracy and the restoration of order in Benue’s judicial system.
The crisis stems from the removal of Benue State Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, by the State House of Assembly, citing allegations of compromise, sabotage, and bias. The removal sparked controversy and divided opinions across the legal and civil society communities.
However, the NJC has strongly rejected the removal, describing it as unconstitutional and a clear violation of the rule of law. The council insists that proper procedures were not followed, and such actions weaken judicial independence.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, CGGTN leaders stated that allowing the removal to stand would set a dangerous precedent for the judiciary across Nigeria. They urged the NJC and the Attorney General to take firm steps to resolve the crisis and protect the sanctity of judicial appointments.
The CSOs reaffirmed their commitment to defending the rule of law and ensuring that due process is respected, warning that democracy can only thrive when institutions are protected from political interference.
