President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Shamsedeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as the new Accountant General of the Federation. His appointment will officially take effect on March 7, 2025, the day the current Accountant General, Oluwatoyin Madehin, is set to retire.
The announcement came through a statement issued on Tuesday by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who described Ogunjimi’s emergence as the result of a competitive and merit-based selection process.
Ogunjimi, 57, had already been identified as Madehin’s successor back in December 2024. However, his appointment was only finalized after a selection committee thoroughly screened qualified candidates from within the Federal Civil Service.
The new Accountant General brings decades of experience in public finance and accounting, having served in several key positions within the civil service prior to this appointment.
Tinubu’s administration emphasized that Ogunjimi’s selection aligns with ongoing efforts to prioritize competence and transparency in top government appointments, particularly in critical offices handling national finances.
As Ogunjimi prepares to assume office, expectations are high for reforms aimed at improving accountability, enhancing public sector financial management, and boosting confidence in Nigeria’s fiscal processes.
