Oyo Installs Spikes To Stop ‘One-Way’ Driving

In a fresh move to tackle reckless driving, the Oyo State government has installed iron spikes on the busy Idi-Ape Road in Ibadan to stop motorists from driving against traffic.

The new spikes are part of a broader plan by the government to discourage ‘one-way’ driving, a habit blamed for many road crashes in the state capital. Similar installations are expected to appear soon on other major roads across Ibadan.

A video shared on X by @Oyoaffairs showed the sharp spikes placed along Idi-Ape Road. According to the post, “The spikes are designed to puncture the tyres of vehicles driving the wrong way.”

Government officials say the harsh measure became necessary after repeated warnings failed to stop motorists from flouting traffic rules. The spikes act as a physical deterrent, forcing drivers to follow the correct lanes.

Many residents praised the move, saying it would reduce accidents and ease traffic congestion. Others urged the government to ensure clear signs are placed so innocent drivers don’t fall victim.

Oyo’s transport authorities have also warned that drivers caught deliberately damaging the spikes or finding ways to evade them will face heavy fines and possible vehicle impoundment.
