The Federal Executive Council (FEC), led by President Bola Tinubu, has approved ₦10.3 billion to boost healthcare delivery across Nigeria. This funding will cover essential medical supplies, diagnostic equipment, and life-saving drugs.
Breakdown of the Approval:
1. Third-line Antiretroviral Drugs – ₦997 million
To support HIV patients resistant to first- and second-line treatments.
Ensures sustained access to vital medications despite changes in global health financing.
2. Locally Manufactured Diabetes Diagnostic Kits – ₦2 billion
To tackle rising diabetes cases in Nigeria.
Blood glucose monitoring devices, produced by a Lagos-based company, will be distributed to primary healthcare centers nationwide.
Health workers will be trained to use the kits for improved diabetes management.
3. Essential Medications – ₦4.5 billion
Covers antibiotics, antihypertensives, anti-diabetic drugs, and more.
All medicines will be sourced from local manufacturers to promote local industry and reduce costs.
4. Advanced Diagnostic Equipment for Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi – ₦2.1 billion
Funds will be used to procure a mobile X-ray machine and rehabilitate a 64-slice CT scan.
Enhances diagnostic capabilities at the hospital and boosts healthcare access across northern Nigeria.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, emphasized that this investment aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to affordable, accessible, and high-quality healthcare, while promoting local production and reducing dependence on imports.
