Reps Move To Tackle Incessant Killings In Edo

General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately deploy additional security personnel to Okpekpe community in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, following the brutal killing of innocent residents by suspected herdsmen.

This resolution came after the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Marcus Onobun, representing Esan West/Esan East/Igueben Federal Constituency, during plenary on Wednesday.

Onobun lamented that Edo State, once known for its peaceful atmosphere, is now facing growing insecurity due to violent attacks allegedly carried out by herdsmen.

Citing a Pulsewireng Newspaper report published on February 26, 2025, the lawmaker revealed that over 32 lives have been lost in recent weeks, including two indigenous residents of Okpekpe community who were murdered on February 24. Additionally, he referenced a violent clash in Ovia South-West between cocoa farmers and Ijaw militants, which reportedly claimed at least 28 lives.

“These killings have thrown Edo residents into fear and uncertainty, disrupting economic activities across the state,” Onobun stated.

He warned that the Edo State Government appears overwhelmed by the escalating violence and called on the Federal Government to urgently step in to restore peace and security in the state.
